I photographed Emily's (Mom) birthday party in July. So I had previously met this family, and had the privilege of coming back out to do formal family photos as well.
When I arrived at their home, Mom was still getting ready. When Dad (Jason) went inside to let Mom know that I was there - it gave me a chance to bond with the kids. They had seen me at the birthday party, but there was a lot of people there that evening, so I needed a chance to get them comfortable with me quickly. So, we played a little bit of soccer, and I was immediately taken with how brother allowed sister to have turns to kick the ball too. Not only did he allow her to play, but he instructed her to take a turn. (Be still my heart!!) They completely beat me - of course, this is a way to gain quick rapport with little kids - put in the effort, but let them win.
Once Mom came down, and we were formally doing introductions, I asked for their ages. Nathan is 6 and Abby is 4 - but she very quickly clarified that she's 4 1/2!!
These two kids are SO creative!! They kept up with me (I'm a giant kid at heart) and didn't miss a beat. I have techniques for working with kids... ways to get them to naturally smile - and they played right along with me.
And check out their swagger! So authentic and natural to work with!!
If you are interested in having a family portrait session, here's a few things to know: I travel to your home or we can find a location that works with your personality. I take my time to work with your kids to get those authentic smiles. We play games, I give them a lot of breaks - I let them be in charge at times. I'm constantly taking photos, so that the kids are used to the camera, but we'll only keep the really really good ones. (Also, I don't put your kids names in my blogs... I'm pretty protective about their identity).
So if you're ready to stop bribing your kids to smile for real - contact me! And I'll take it from there.
